This gripping courtroom drama will give you lots of food for thought. The Lark is suitable for adults and teens.

Darwin Leon to be NTAL’s March Featured Artist
Darwin Leon’s powerful surreal paintings use the human figure to explore current and historical aspects of humanity. His work will be on display at The Great Frame Up gallery from March 2-14, with an artist’s reception on Friday March 5, from 6-9pm.

Darwin Leon's work is energetic, fresh, and abundant with color. He reinvents classic techniques of renaissance masters and combines them with a surrealistic perspective to create a contemporary approach he calls Expressionistic Surrealism. His painting show imaginative figures and landscapes through which he explores the individual, social, and political issues of our time, always with a slight tongue in cheek, “so that people can grasp the meaning without feeling too challenged by the message.”

Born in Havana, Cuba, Darwin Leon moved with his family to Spain to escape Cuba’s political and economic crisis, and then later to Miami. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Miami International University of Art & Design. During his studies he first focused on religious portraits, but later became fascinated with figurative and expressionistic forms, into which he incorporated satire and irony through surrealism and cubism.

Recently Darwin Leon taught drawing, painting, and anatomy at the South Florida Arts Center, in Miami Beach. Currently he teaches "The Dynamic Human Figure" at the Bradenton Art Center, and painting at the Carrollwood Cultural Center. He lives in Bradington with his wife and two children. His work can be seen at www.DarwinLeon.com.

Interested in meeting other artists? Visit the North Tampa Art League’s website at www.northtampaarts.com . The club meets the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7pm at the Compton Community Center. Call 813-908-3959 for information.

UT Symposium Explores The Mystery of the Orient Express TODAY!
Though you can no longer ride the Orient Express, four UT professors will explore the romance and mystery of the famous railway line in a symposium on Tuesday, March 2, from 4-6 p.m. in the Crescent Club on the 9th floor of the Vaughn Center.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will also feature a short documentary edited by Santiago Echeverry, UT associate professor of art.

The Orient Express was an international railway line that originally ran between Paris and Vienna starting in 1883. In 1899, the Eastern endpoint of the journey was extended to Istanbul (then known as Constantinople). In time the Orient Express came to symbolize luxury travel because of its flawless service, opulent decoration, exquisite cuisine and prominent passengers. The rail line served as the setting for many literary works including Graham Greene's Stamboul Train, Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover. The Orient Express ceased to operate in 1977.

The topics are as follows:
  • All Aboard the Afrique Occidentale Express: The Orient Express and Europe's West African Trains by Kevin Fridy, assistant professor of government, history and sociology.
  • Let Us Make the Fantasy More Fantastic: Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express by Z. Esra Mirze Santesso, assistant professor of government, history and English.
  • Murder on the Orient Express as Hollywood Renaissance Film by Andrew McAlister, assistant professor of communication.
  • Orient Express: More than Just a Train by Britt Shirley, associate professor of management and information systems.

WTCA's Gallery 209 I Before E Art Opening TONIGHT
I Before E features new works by Jason Fondren, Rich Frederick, Jon Rodriguez, Trinity Rivard.
The reference to the grade school English class rhyme, I Before E, is the foundation of our language. This relates to the show in that the four artists are all painters whose varying styles imply the foundation of our visual language, adhering to certain “rules” within their discipline.
I Before E is interpreted through the notion that art is essentially a means of communicating the human experience. It is through art that we hold a mirror to society as seen through the artist’s eyes. The “I” comes to stand for the artist and the “E” for everyone else. Though at first it may seem self-absorbed, it actually refers to the process of turning inward to be able to process the world and ultimately communicate it visually for others. Though the four painters are so different in style, they go through the same process in trying to achieve that connection.
Please join us in WTCA's 2nd floor Gallery 209 tonight Friday, February 26, 2010 from 7pm-11pm for an evening of innovative art, meeting the artists, music, appetizers, donation bar, and the undeniable ambiance of community and our beloved cigar factory.
Free and open to the public, but any small donation is accepted and greatly appreciated. All are welcome to come share a piece of local history and wonderful art work by four talented local artists. The art show runs through March 19, 2010.
West Tampa Center for the Arts (WTCA) is located at 1906 N. Armenia Avenue (corner of Spruce), Tampa, FL 33607813. 453.4381, wtca.art@gmail.com

See I Am A Cuban Sandwich and the crazy sack of Red Hot Nuts!
Authors Richard and Mary Ellen DiPietra take you on a journey through the physical and cultural life of Ybor City. Not the Ybor of today with its bar scene and late night revels. This is what Ybor was, before time and Interstate 4 cut through the heart of a very special place.
DiPietra, a native of Tampa, has looked back and blended true remembrances with touches of fiction, to created an honest and touching look into the human experience of growing up – especially growing up in a melting pot that simmers with the smell of Spanish Bean Soup and fresh baked Cuban Bread – the kind that has the palm frond in it.These stories will remind you of what Tampa was and perhaps even what you were growing up.

As a college speech and debate competitor Adam won 4 team national titles and was a national finalist, himself, in Duo Interpretation (twice), Prose Interpretation, and Poetry Interpretation. WTCA's Gallery 209 presents I Before E Art Opening This Friday
I Before E
featuring new works by Jason Fondren, Rich Frederick, Jon Rodriguez, Trinity Rivard that reference to the grade school English class rhyme, the foundation of our language.

Though the 4 painters are so different in style, they go through the same process in trying to achieve that connection.

Please join us on Friday, February 26, 2010 from 7pm-11pm in WTCA's 2nd floor Gallery 209 for an evening of innovative art, meeting the artists, music, appetizers, donation bar, and the undeniable ambiance of community and our beloved cigar factory.

Free and open to the public, but any small donation is accepted and greatly appreciated. All are welcome to come share a piece of local history and wonderful art work by four talented local artists. The art show runs through March 19, 2010

The West Tampa Center for the Arts (WTCA) is located at 1906 N. Armenia Avenue (corner of Spruce)Tampa, FL 33607, 813. 453.4381, wtca.art@gmail.com

Writers to Give Advice to Aspiring Authors & Screenwriters TONIGHT
The movie theaters are filled with films that were adapted from books. But how does one write a book that will end up on the silver screen?

UT Assistant Professor of Journalism John Capouya knows. On Monday, February 22, he’ll share his secrets at an event called From Book to Movie: Two Writers Tell a Gorgeous Story, at 6 p.m. in the Reeves Theater on the second floor of the Vaughn Center. With his regal capes and feminine hairdo, George challenged traditional concepts of masculinity and created a following for the “heel’’ or villain in wrestling. Reviews of Gorgeous George appeared in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated and The Wall Street Journal.

TIGLFF presents Family
On Saturday February 20, 2010 at 7:30 PM join TIGLFF at Muvico Centro Ybor, located at 1600 E 8th Ave, Tampa, FL 33605 for a screening of Family.
Closeted life can be pretty cramped with all the hangers hitting your head. Not being able to live out in the open is sometimes a small price to pay compared to the fear of familial and professional backlash. But the price becomes too high for thirtysomething Felicia, as she finds herself coaxing her lesbian lover into a closet due to a surprise visit from her mom. Her relationship now in jeopardy, Felicia has a proposal for her similarly repressed group of sapphic friends: all six must come out within thirty days. Of course, this is easier said than done. For cocky WNBA player Kemp, future endorsements are on the line. Sabrina, a meek churchgoer, must reconcile her beliefs with her desires. Tonya feels ongoing pressure from her fiance, but can't stand up to her pushy sister, and Melanie will do whatever it takes to regain custody of her daughter from a former girlfriend. The bravest of the bunch, Monifa, confesses her sexuality to her parents with hilarious results, but then finds herself swept up in an unexpected love affair. And Felicia, the catalyst for the pact, is too afraid to stick to her own plan.
Tackling relevant African American LGBT issues such as church values and coming out in Hollywood, writer-director Faith Trimel (Black Aura on an Angel) effectively transcends color lines with her powerful, relatable story of confronting your own truth. Website http://www.familythefilm.net/
Faith Trimmel will be in attendance for Q&A after the screening.
Director Faith Trimel received the Emerging Filmmaker Award from TIGLFF 2009.

Depictions of Love
On Thursday, February 18 at 6 p.m. Mary Ellen Bitner, Art Curator at the Carrollwood Cultural Center, will present art lecture entitled Depictions of Love.

Love, the most powerful of human emotions has been an enduring subject of visual art. How do artists depict this intangible and mysterious feeling? In honor of St Valentine’s Day, we will examine some iconic images of love in Western Art, from Michelangelo’s Pieta to Klimt’s The Kiss. We will take a close look at artists like Chagall, who make love the overreaching theme of their art. What do these depictions have in common? Join us for a lively exploration of how artists see love.

Mary Ellen Curran Bitner: Always very much at home in the arts, Mary Ellen studied ballet, voice and the piano from a very early age. When she turned 30, she decided to turn her creative energies toward the visual arts. Painting summers as a self -taught artist while she taught in elementary school, she succeeded in having her work shown at galleries in Alabama and Florida. After retirement from teaching, Mary Ellen went back and took college to take drawing, painting, and design to polish her skills. Mary Ellen calls herself an “eclectic” artist. She loves painting many genres in different media, and in different styles. Always endeavoring to try something new, she is constantly experimenting with different media from spackling to tissue paper but she favors oils and pastel where she feels more in control of the outcome. Lately, she has been employing acrylics to create her musical abstract expressionist pieces, which will be featured at the Center this September.Mary Ellen is President and Founding member of the North Tampa Arts League and is the present Art Curator of the Carrollwood Cultural Center.

Artist Statement: I am passionate about creating art that is relevant to the meaning and experience of being alive in this magnificently beautiful world. Trying always to celebrate the beauty of life and all of creation, I endeavor to create art that lifts the spirit and mind to higher realms and raises our consciousness to recognize that beauty and life should be treasured.

Free to the public. The Carrollwood Cultural Center is located at 4537 Lowell Road, Tampa Fl 33618 (813-269-1310)For more information about the Carrollwood Cultural Center, visit the Center website at CarrollwoodCenter.org

The Robert Helps Music Festival Schedule
Robert Helps only lived one year into the twenty-first century, but he would have been delighted to experience the recent positive transformation of musical attitudes towards the supposedly “minor” composers he loved and deliberately resembled. The “Music formerly known as Classical” often regarded a small number of heroic individual composers prejudicially, relegating all category-independent difference to the margins. Naturally, the music produced by composer-performers like Busoni, Godowsky, Grainger, and Enescu (with Helps naturally extending this pedigreed lineage) was informed by different sensibilities than their composer-only contemporaries. And, in spite of being victims of some vigorous rhetorical poisoning by narrow-minded musical critics who insisted on “specialists” in the field, these complete musicians were able to put their best into their active careers as performer (and often teacher or conductor as well) while producing “major” work as composer. From the tireless efforts of these important and fascinating twentieth-century figures, we have learned to respect and reconsider this lineage.

During his lifetime, Helps was a “cult” composer, treasured by an elite few. Soon, the musical establishment which deprived him of the recognition he deserved will have disappeared as such, and a new set of ears will respond, delighted, to his original and engaging work.

The Robert Helps Music Festival is being held at the University of South Florida this week. This is a schedule of events. Visit our website for more detailed information at tampaarts.org

Photographers - Get Your 15 Minutes of Fame!
Calling all photographers who want to share their work with the rest of the world - or at least with fellow enthusiasts. This is your chance.

On Wednesday, February 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the museum, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMOPA) will hold a forum titled “Your 15 Minutes of Fame.”

Six local photographers will present their work in digital or physical formats, and will share insights into their work . Audience members will be able to ask questions and cast votes for the “Audience Choice Award.”

This forum will be held monthly and is open to the public. The evening is free for members and $4 for non-members. However, presenters must be members of the museum. You can join at www.fmopa.org.

The admission fee also includes the chance to view the three current museum exhibitions. On view are “August Sander, the Twentieth-Century Man; Jules Aarons, Views From the Street.” Both Sander’s and Aarons’ images have entered the established canon of definitive works of the last century. German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) started his great project around 1910 with a goal of producing catalogue of representative types of German Society, the so-called “Man in the Twentieth Century.”

Jules Aarons (1921-2008) was an internationally known photographer who documented life on the street around the world—Boston, Paris, England, India, South America, and Japan.

Also on view is the Heritage Photography Contest featuring photography by students from Tampa’s Van Buren Middle School. Thanks to generous grants from Verizon, this is the third year FMOPA has teamed with the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs and the school to carry out this project.

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is located at 200 N. Tampa St. (on the corner of Jackson Street and Ashley Drive), Open 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Entry into the museum is a suggested $4 donation. For additional information, call (813) 221-2222 or visit www.FMoPA.org.

For Scotland, the late 18th and early 19th century was a time of profound and uncomfortable changes. Economic and social structures were altered dramatically as the Industrial Revolution brought factories and mechanization to Scotland's rural world. At the same time, the Scottish Highlanders were being driven from their lands by the English conquerors, forced into the Lowlands, forbidden to practice their familiar customs. It was a difficult time, often a brutal time... and yet, this was a time of great poets, the likes of Robert Burns and Robert Tannahill. And it was a time of great music.

The Tannahill Weavers' diverse repertoire reflects the duality of Scotland's musical heritage. It embraces both the mystical quality of the Highlander's Celtic music, and the rollicking, sometimes even brawling qualities of the Lowlander's Anglo-Scots tunes. The Tannahill Weavers' arrangements blend the beauty of the traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. The penetrating sound of the Highland bagpipes is a thread of ancient memory running through it all. www.tannahillweavers.com

Show time is 8p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. http://www.wmnf.org/
