BRUCE MAU LIVE Tonight!
“Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child),” “Don’t clean your desk,” and “Make new words” are just a few of the rules that visionary, innovator, designer, and author Bruce Mau lives by. Calling him a visionary seems lofty but then again he tends to tackle the lofty. From his book Massive Change to his most recent The Third Teacher: 79 Ways You Can Transform Teaching and Learning, Mau communicates his vision of changing the design of the world. Again, a lofty challenge, but be assured he will convince you that it’s a lot easier than you think; just don’t clean your desk.

PECHA KUCHA V6
Tonight, Friday, August 27, 2010, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm at the Lafayette Room at Mise En Place see what's going on for Pecha Kucha V6.
But what is Pecha Kucha? Pecha Kucha Night was devised in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo's Klein-Dytham Architecture (KDa), as a way to attract people to Super Deluxe, their experimental event space in Roppongi.
Pecha Kucha Night events consist of around a dozen presentations, each presenter having 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. Each presenter has just 6 minutes 40 seconds to explain their ideas before the next presenter takes the stage. Conceived as a venue through which young designers could meet, show their work, exchange ideas, and network, the format keeps presentations concise, fast-paced and entertaining.
In 2004 PKN began running in a few cities in Europe, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon, now running in more than 260 cities in almost every corner of the globe.
It is also a blend open mike, happy hour and forum for new ideas. Designers, advocates and overall creative passionate people are given 20 slides shown for 20 seconds each.
How do you say it? In four syllables as "Peh-cha kuh-cha", with an emphasis on the first syllable. Pecha Kucha is the Japanese word for "chit-chat."
Presenters tonight include: Hadrian Alegarbes - environment, Wendy Babcox - photographic artist, David Bailey - architect John Byrd - ceramics, John Dollus - 3d realization, Jeremy Jackson - sommelier, Bruce Monroe - artist, Ted Van Cleave - photographic artist.

Pecha Kucha V6 Tonight, Carlos Garaicoa Reception at USF CAM tonight, Heard 'Em Say Teen Poetry,

Deadline for Day of the Dead Altar "Call to Artist" is this Friday!
A Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar is meant to honor the memory of someone who touched your life. This can be anyone from the family pet to Mother Teresa. Anyone who had a positive impact on your life can be the subject of your Day of the Dead altar. People also make altars to show their support for others. There have been Dia de los Muertos altars made to those who have died due to AIDS related illnesses, to those lost in the World Trade Towers attack and the students at Columbine.

There are people who believe that those building an altar are trying to raise the dead. This can’t be farther from the truth, because the belief is that the dead are never really gone, so raising them would be redundant. There is nothing demonic about building a Day of the Dead altar. Are we trying to communicate with the dead? Yes, and no. There are two aspects to altar making on el Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead). The first is to communicate with those that are no longer physically with us. I don’t see how this is any different from people going to visit the graves of their dearly departed. It isn’t about witchcraft, it is about having an eternal dialogue with those that we love. The second aspect is the connection it provides us to the world at large and to our place in the after-life. By building an altar we are acknowledging that we go on and that not being physically present isn’t the same as being gone.

The Artist Advisory Committee of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County is having a Day of the Dead Altar Exhibition at the Tampa Museum of Art during an Art After Dark event on Friday October 22nd.

The Altar exhibition application "Call for Artists" deadline has been extended to this Friday, August 27, 2010 . Visit this link for an application and details: https://public.me.com/gregory111

Please contact Brenda Gregory of the Artist Advisory Committee at brenda.gregory@earthlink.net if you have any question!

Day of The Dead at TMA with the AAC

Carlos Garaicoa: La enmienda que hay en mí Opens at USF CAM Today
The University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum is pleased to present Carlos Garaicoa: La enmienda que hay en mí (Making Amends). Carlos Garaicoa (b. 1967, Havana, Cuba) is known for his study of the contemporary city and its built historical, political, societal and humanistic conditions in a multidisciplinary approach that defies categorization and involves a broad range of materials and techniques. He employs drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, installation, photography, video and architectural models in investigations of history, politics, architecture, urbanism and culture. Driven by a belief in the artist’s moral obligation towards society, Garaicoa—who lives and works in Havana and in Madrid, Spain—creates new vocabularies in order to discuss social and political issues.
Inspired by the circumstances of Cuba, he has adopted his native city as a laboratory and metaphor for human existence. He charges his works with commentary on issues such as architecture’s ability to alter the course of history, the failure of modernism as a catalyst for social change, human rights, and the decay of 20th century utopias.
Works in the exhibition include The Crown Jewels (Las joyas de la corona), 2009, a series of eight cast silver models of international places of military authority, surveillance and repression, representing the National Stadium of Chile, Cuba’s Villa Marista and Linea y A (Ministry of the Interior), the East German Stasi, Guantánamo Naval Base, the Pentagon, the School of the Naval Academy in Buenos Aires, and the KGB in Moscow.
Intricate and intimately scaled, they are displayed individually in glass vitrines. Garaicoa has said that the work “…was conceived thinking of its possible impact on two audiences: those living under contradictory political systems—where human rights are obviously repressed—and those in systems that claim to have solved such contradictions, as in the case of Europe.” In other works, the artist’s idea evolves over series of black and white photographs altered and amended in various ways, always dealing with an aspect of Havana and its built environment, and often contrasting utopian ideology with reality.
Untitled (Sentences) [Sin título (frases)], 2009, documents the artist’s perambulations through the formerly bustling downtown commercial center. Responding to the fanciful names emblazoned on now deteriorated or abandoned storefronts, he writes “street haikus” in pins and needles directly on the photographs.
Other works include Saving Time (2009), a 1950s modernist wall clock that runs backwards; Theory and Practice in the 18th Brumaire of K. Marx (Teoria y práctica en el 18 Brumario de K. Marx), 2009, an installation of bookcase and books that contrasts Marxist theory with current Cuban reality; For Life… (De por vida…), 2009, a graphite drawing on a paper scroll with a photograph of an ideological billboard, and Bend City, 2009, the artist’s exquisite cut paper installation, depicting an entire imaginary city.
Exhibit dates: August 23 – December 11, 2010.
Carlos Garaicoa’s works are included in many public and private collections including: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Ella Fontanals Cisneros Collection, Miami, FL; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Tate Modern, London, England; Los Angeles County Museum, LACMA, Los Angeles; Museo Nacional de Arte Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain; National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Colloquium Participant Bios: Artist Carlos Garaicoa, a native of Havana, Cuba, lives and works in Madrid, Spain, and Havana, where he studied thermodynamics at the Instituto Hermanos Gómez and visual art at the Instituto Superior de Arte. Since 1991, Garaicoa has exhibited extensively at international venues including the 53rd Venice Biennale and Documenta 11. His works belong to public and private collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern (London), Museum of Modern Art (New York), and el Museo Nacional de Arte Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid).
Noel Smith is Curator of Education/Latin American and Caribbean Art at the Institute for Research in Art at the University of South Florida. She has co-curated several major exhibitions including The Amazing and the Immutable, combining vintage and contemporary photography, Los Carpinteros: Inventing the World, and Homing Devices, among others. She holds an M.A. in art history with an emphasis on the history of photography, directs the USF Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program, and teaches and lectures widely.
Corina Matamoros is Curator of Contemporary Cuban Art at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba. She holds a degree in art history from the School of Philology, University of Havana, and a degree in museum studies from the Louvre School. During her thirty-two year tenure at the Museum, she has organized numerous exhibitions of contemporary Cuban art including José Bedia, Kcho, Los Carpinteros, Tania Bruguera, and Belkis Ayón, among others. Most recently, she curated the exhibition Eagerly Awaiting, Raúl Martínez, of the work of the seminal Cuban pop artist, for the Magnam Metz Gallery in New York. She has published essays and articles about art, museum studies and collecting, including the recent compilation of essays entitled Mirada de curador/The Curator’s Gaze (Letras Cubanas, Havana, 2009).
Mark Weston, AIA, is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of South Florida where he teaches graduate courses in design and technology. His research focus is multi-disciplinary, combining experimental building materials, digital fabrication, and physical computing with traditional notions of making in order to generate interactive and complex physical environments. From the co-dependence of I Will Follow Him to the anger of These Boots Are Made for Walking, to the cynicism of What's Love Got To Do With It, and finally to the strength of Hero. Combining excerpts of 60 songs with women's own stories about finding dreams, lost love, relationship issues, entering the workforce, gaining independence, and more, this show is "exhilarating!" It's more than just a story worth telling, it's a must-see and must-hear.

For more than the first half of the last century, the voice of women in Top-40 popular music has been one of neediness and dependency. I'll do anything for you; just be my baby, even if you're no good and treat me bad; just LOVE me and I'll stand by my man. By the end of the century, things were quite different. Popular music had come far enough so that women looked for the hero within themselves, were urged to get on their feet and make it happen, ready to stand on her own with or without a man. Messages encompassed I am woman-hear me roar, to I will survive and encouraged women to find their own dreams.

Vanderbilt professor Dr. Dorothy Marcic created the show based on her book, RESPECT: Women and Popular Music, where she analyzed all Top-40 female song lyrics since 1900.

Recent feedback from audience members includes: "Your show is one of the best things I have ever seen, period." -Shawn Johnson, Kansas City.

"This was one of the most inspiring performances I have attended in my life."-Vladimir Brajkovic, Melbourne, Australia;

"It was the musical history of MY life," Sheri Bewitt, Orlando.

Join the journey of women from co-dependence to independence – from "Someone To Watch Over Me" to "I Will Survive." See the progress of women from property of their husbands to presidents of countries in the 20th century – hear it through a dramatic musical presentation.

Viewpoints at TECO Public Art Gallery
TECO Public Art Gallery opened Viewpoints: A University of Tampa Faculty Exhibition from August 3 through September 15, 2010 showing 20 artworks by 10 University of Tampa faculty members.

Included are works in pencil, oil on canvas, mixed media, bronze, and digital photography. A wide range of subject matter, style and viewpoint creates a visually diverse exhibition for the viewer. Art Department Chair at the University of Tampa since 2008, Catherine Chastain-Elliot helped organize the exhibition and shares her viewpoint of the beauty of place in her oil paintings titled Morning Mist and End of Summer, Blue Ridge Mountains.

Julia Kristmundsdottir sees her viewpoint as one who records information from daily life and states it through the simplest of forms. Bye-bye is a graphic, black & white statement of birds struggling to fly loose of the dripping black paint that holds them captive.

Intricate pencil drawings by Doug Sutherland describe detailed events and important reflections from the past, while Jeanne Cameron’s large scale paintings of geometric patterns created with color and organized shapes, invite the viewer to reflect and contemplate. The paintings by Rebecca Skelton titled Green Stream and Blue Stream are peaceful places to dwell: soothing color studies that reflect the artist’s interest in evoking an emotional response in the viewer. Two square, bronze mixed media pieces by Jack King are his attempt “to achieve a visual balance between the dominance of imposed order and the chaos of complete freedom” that fascinates him. A mixed-media, low relief sculpture in the round presented by Kendra Frorup contains paper printed and arranged like the spokes on a wheel that is centered and anchored by a rubber, inflated tire tube. The whole piece is a wooden ‘wheel’ and is titled Beryl Gibson. Elena Cifuentes exhibits two mixed media pieces which comment on society - one titled Circus Tent which features clown and circus imagery overlaid on newspaper with glaring headlines typical of current everyday news and Kismet with a gold painted frame making references about societies fate. Two pieces by Catherine Thompson reference her viewpoint on violence, death and war mixed up with large scale, glossy photographic images of dolls.

The TECO Public Art Gallery is located at 702 North Franklin Street, Tampa, FL 33602. It is open Monday-Friday from 8 am.-5 pm. For information about this exhibition or to contact an artist, please call Debra at 813.767.1600 or dradke1@tampabay.rr.com.

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead Opens Tomorrow!
When CB's dog dies from rabies, he begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too stoned to provide any coherent speculation. His sister has gone goth, his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group's bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.

Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that's both haunting and hopeful. By Bert Royal, Directed by David M. Jenkins

Deep Carnivale returns to Ybor City on September 11, 2010!
Deep Carnivale – A Celebration of Words is Tampa’s premiere literature festival. Each year, it brings together hundreds of arts enthusiasts of all creeds, united around a common love of language. Deep Carnivale showcases not only literature and poetry, but also the visual arts, dance, drama and music, because all of these can be mediums for the expression of words as art. Programming at Deep Carnivale stretches from the playful to the avant garde, with activities for all ages, with a heavy focus on literacy and the enjoyment of reading for our younger guests.

So save the date! Deep Carnivale (What’s it mean? Who cares!) Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Hillsborough Community College - Ybor Campus (2112 N 15th St).Yes, it’s a school, but it has great air conditioning, and we promise, no pop quizzes, no FCAT! The fun starts at 10AM and goes until we can't take it anymore. Or you can't take it anymore. Lots to see hear and do for kids, parents, intellectuals (smart asses) and the rest of us people (folks, and you!).

At a moment when ignorance is being aggressively defended, Deep Carnivale still respects our intelligence. Imagine that.”- David Warner, Editor, Creative Loafing

Good News from Melinda Chavez at FMoPA
The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts recently received a wonderful grant from Las Damas de Arte to fund a project at MacDill Air Force Base.

Las Damas's generous $500 grant provided resources so that Jim Moorehead, one of our members and a professional photographer, could capture images of the men and women as they returned home from tours of duty in the Near East.

The resulting images thus became personal mementos for the soldiers and their families. In addition, the museum will use them in future exhibitions to share this experience with the general public. The funds underwrote CDs and mailing supplies to enable FMoPA to deliver these gifts to the returnees.

NTAL's Artist of the Month of August is Mary Ellen Bitner
The North Tampa Art League is pleased to announce that Mary Ellen Bitner has been chosen as Artist of the Month for August, 2010.
Mary Curran’s work is influenced by her favorite artists, DaVinci, Cezanne, Chagall, O’Keeffe, Kahlo, Joan Mitchell and Jay DeFeo. With her many years dancing the ballet, she has become very conscious of line, form, color, music, and drama which she expresses in her paintings.

Being comfortable painting different genres in a variety of media, she has received recognition for her large abstract florals. Flowers are a favorite genre for her because she grew up surrounded by flowers in gardens grown by her mother, Florence Curran, a master gardener. The artist dedicates her flowers to the loving memory of her mother, whose name happens to mean flower.

Mary Curran Bitner has become increasingly conscious of painting as a woman with a very feminine spirit, as opposed to the traditional point of view . Early in her body of work she painted how it feels to be a woman. Now she paints with the pure joy of being a woman!

The artists featured in Opera Tampa’s 2010 Vocal Arts Festival will train with some of the greatest talents in the world in a variety of programs designed to teach and nurture singers of all ages and skill levels. In addition to the performances listed above, the 2010 Vocal Arts Festival will host a full schedule of intensive coaching sessions, lessons, master classes and workshops. When young singers find their path in singing, they need a place to go to explore, evaluate and absorb what is truly the highest level of music. Singers, ages 15 to 20, will be chosen from around the country for Generation X (July 31-Aug. 6), a pre-professional intensive featuring faculty from Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music and the Metropolitan Opera.
Opera Tampa Artistic Advisor Sherrill Milnes and Vice President/Associate General Director of Opera Tampa Maria Zouves founded V.O.I.C.Experience (VE) in 2001, with the aim to create a means for singers to advance in their careers, to give them access to the highest level of educators and to guide them in directions that will lead to their success. VE will take place at the Straz Center, Aug. 6-22. At the end of the program, five singers will be chosen to be the Opera Tampa New Artists and be part of Opera Tampa productions and community and educational events for the 2010-11 season.
Sherrill Milnes & Friends is an intensive for the professional and career-seeking singer and includes the audition workshop “Mission: Audition.” Educators from around the globe converge at the Straz Center, Aug. 6 – 22, for three weeks of high-level workshops, master classes and performances, presented by VE.

Students will study voice, theory and interpretation in classes with Patel Conservatory vocal teachers and guest instructors. Students will have the opportunity to observe VE singers as they work with master teachers.
In the distinctive Total Interpretation workshop presented by VE, legendary director/producer Tito Capobianco (founder of the Juilliard Opera Center) leads a group of specially selected singers through Puccini’s great master work, La Bohème - delving deeply into the characters and their motivation. Workshops, held Aug. 19-21, are open to a public audience and culminate in an Aug. 21 performance as part of the Capobianco Opera Studio.
A Festival Pass is available for $66 and includes admission to all of the 2010 Vocal Arts Festival events. Centre Gallery’s Glimpses of Elsewhere
Tampa’s abandoned buildings decay unnoticed, taking on human traits of loss, abandonment, and aging. Artist Nicole Abbett enters such environments to link their documentation to personal exploration, and to share in a one-time show the lives and secrets of buildings that would either wise go undocumented.

From July 26 through August 6, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host Elsewhere; an exhibit of photographs, taken with a large format camera, that will transport viewers into the hallways of Tampa’s inaccessible buildings. The photographs will be displayed as one extensive series of works.

As Abbett describes, “the photographs are reminders of the lives of the buildings, their history, and why they no longer have a purpose. The spaces experience processes in their lifetime that mirror my experiences of transformation,” adding that “if someone cared for such buildings they would still be functioning and would not be in the state of decay they are currently in.”

As was most of the Tampa Bay arts community, the Arts Council staff was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the sudden death of Jeff Norton. Many of us have known and worked with Jeff for over 25 years on many different projects - as a teaching artist in the schools, as an evaluator for our performing arts field trips, as a grant recipient, and as an actor in some of Tampa Bay's most creative and memorable theatre productions. Losing Jeff leaves a void in the arts community, and in the hearts of his family and friends. We asked Marty Clear to share some of his thoughts about Jeff, and we shar those with you now.

By Marty Clear
Jeff Norton was murdered. For a day or so I couldn’t comprehend the words. It wasn’t just that it didn’t make sense. It was more than that. It made nonsense. It made anti-sense. Like that “sound of one hand clapping” thing. I couldn’t comprehend it. I didn’t know how to think about it but I couldn’t think about anything else.

I don’t want to make it sound as though I have any special claim on these feelings, any reason to pretend I am more stunned or saddened than anyone else. There are people whose grief is much more profound, family and close friends whose pain is unimaginably worse than my own. I didn’t keep in touch with Jeff much in recent years, and I hadn’t even seen him in a few months. But I knew him for 37 years, went through some pretty intense (good and bad) experiences with him, and I don’t think he’d mind if I said I still counted him as one of my best friends.

So it took a day before my mind got unstuck, before I could comprehend anything beyond that one sentence, that one fact.

It was Jeff himself who snapped me back to some semblance of consciousness, and of course he did it by making me laugh. Someone sent me a video of a song Jeff wrote and performed about Sulphur Springs, where he lived for many years and where I still live. “Where the rents are low and the cars drive slow and you never need a mower ‘cause the grass don’t grow,” Jeff sang to me as I looked out on my back yard, which is noticeably devoid of anything green.

Suddenly the Jeff Norton memories rushed through my consciousness so fast that I couldn’t grab hold of any one of them. I sat alone at my desk and laughed out loud for a blessed few seconds, my first laughter in 24 hours, and then smiled as I began to be able to hold onto the feelings. Jeff's life and Jeff's art had given me that.

Let me just share a memory or two, though I want to share so very many more. There were the performances, of course, from Shakespeare to Cyrano to “The Perfect Ganesh.” Never a false moment, never an uninteresting movement, inflection or facial expression.

There was the one man show about Keith Haring that he wrote and performed. He had never written a play before and didn’t know anything about keith haring when Stageworks asked him to write that show. But he just said okay and matter-of-factly went about writing one of the most memorable plays I’ve ever seen.

My favorite stage moments from Jeff came with School of Night, a sketch and improv comedy group back in late ‘80s that created a buzz that has never been equaled in the local theatre scene. People lined up around the block to get into the tiny theater where School of Night performed. People came back and saw the same show over and over.

Jeff and I were at a party and I did this thing I do where I make music come out of my nose. Kind of hard to explain if you haven’t seen it, and it doesn’t really matter. Jeff asked me to come and be a guest artist with School of Night for their upcoming show. I hadn’t been on stage since my ninth grade rock and roll band played its only gig and I was terrified about being on stage with the area’s best theater pros. Jeff spent days talking me into it. I made him agree to accompany me on the guitar, and he generously spent most of our rehearsal time trying to coax some self-confidence out of me. I’d ask, “Do you really think people are going to laugh at this?” and he’d look at me like I was crazy. “You’re going to steal the show,” he’d say. “They're going to be laughing so hard they’ll be crying.”

People liked it, I guess, but what I remember most is Jeff in another bit he came up with, where he stood onstage and ate a banana while “Also Sprach Zarathustra” played. That’s all there was to it, just Jeff eating fruit to music, and it was unspeakably hilarious. There is a video of it on Youtube. Take a look and see if you can name any other performer in the world who could have been that funny doing something so simple.

Anyway, for the last bit of the show, all the guys in School of Night got on stage and did a strip tease. Jeff told me I was welcome to join them. When I declined he was genuinely taken aback. “You don’t want to strip?,” he asked incredulously. He actually could not imagine that someone would pass up a chance to undress in front of a room full of strangers. “Yes,” another cast member said affectionately. “Jeff’s quite the exhibitionist.”

Years later, after I had been writing about local theater for some time, Jeff and I were talking and I guess I mentioned some insecurities about being a theater critic, that I felt often like a sham and an impostor, that I didn’t know anything and that I didn’t have the right to criticize people far more talented than I. “Marty,” Jeff said, “I’ve learned more from reading you than I have from some acting classes.”

Hyperbole aside, I knew he was sincere. It’s still perhaps the finest and most generous compliment of my career, and I hold onto it whenever people call me an idiot, which happens more often than I’m comfortable admitting.

Ever since Jeff's death people keep saying he was a “nice guy” or a “gentle man.” That’s not wrong – I really, honestly, can’t think of a bad thing to say about him – but it’s a little misleading. Those phrases make him sound passive, which he wasn’t. I have never known anyone who was more engaged by life.

All I’ve written here is totally inadequate, I know. People who knew Jeff well will be annoyed by what I didn’t say, and people who didn’t know him won’t really get a sense of the man from what I did say. My apologies to both groups. I'm still a little raw and it was the best I could do. Right now I’m going to pay tribute to my friend in a much more fitting way. I’m going to get back on Youtube, watch the banana thing, listen to the Sulphur Springs song, marvel at his talent and let him make me laugh.

Goodbye, Jeff. Thanks for helping me get through this.
